The phrase “high-deductible health plan” (HDHP) has a very specific meaning for purposes of health savings account (HSA) eligibility.

To be HSA-eligible, an individual must have an HDHP that:

  • Is a major medical plan
  • Has a high deductible as determined from annually by the IRS
  • Has a cap on out-of-pocket exposure as determined annually by the IRS
