Frequently Asked Questions

Can an employee change their FSA annual election?

In most cases, participant elections to a flexible spending account (FSA) are irrevocable and cannot be changed in the middle of a plan year. However, most employers allow participants to change their elections during the year if the participant experiences a personal change in status or "qualifying event" that falls under one of several exceptions allowed by the IRS.

Examples of qualifying events include:

  • Marriage
  • Birth of a child
  • Change in employment status of an employee's spouse or dependent.

Refer to your plan documents for specific information on what may constitute a qualifying event under your benefit plan.
