Help make your morning commute worth your while.

You may be required to commute to your workplace on a day-to-day basis – why not make the journey more convenient and affordable? Commuter reimbursement accounts (CRA) allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars to put towards eligible transportation and parking expenses. These tax-advantaged accounts can help you save up to 30% on your everyday commuting expenses.

Eligible expenses include:

  • Parking expenses
  • Mass transit pass expenses
  • Commuter highway vehicle (vanpool) expenses (limited)
SAVE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS PER YEAR ON SERVICES YOU RELY ON EVERY SINGLE DAY.

How does it work?

When you choose to participate in your employer-sponsored CRA, you will elect a total dollar amount to contribute to your account, funded in the form of pre-tax payroll deductions on a monthly basis. You can make changes to your monthly election at any time.

Items to note:

  • CRAs are not portable. Should you quit or be terminated from your job, you will immediately lose access to your account funds.
  • Funds left in your CRA at the end of the month will rollover to the following month. If your account balance exceeds your monthly expenses, you may want to consider reducing your monthly election amount.
  • Mass transit funds must be paid using your MyAmeriflex Card. Claim forms may not be submitted for transit expenses.

How much should I contribute?

We recommend taking a look back at your expenses over the last year and making an estimate based on that total.

How much am I allowed to contribute?

The annual limits are set by your employer. However, the IRS has set the following maximums for 2019:

  • $265/month for transit expenses

  • $265/month for parking expenses
